CHIPPING
CHIPPING
Uniform chips from waste wood or whole logs are produced in the Acrowood Slant Disc Chipper. These machines have been in operation for decades and are proven to save mills money by requiring little maintenance while producing high-quality fiber with minimal pins and fines.
Take a look at these Acrowood Slant Disc Chipper videos demonstrating the processing action up close and in slow motion of the precision and speed available when using the Slant Disc Chipper for any wood processing application where wood chip excellence is needed.

Chip quality, installed costs and maintenance costs are the criteria by which all chippers should be measured. Yet they are rarely met by a single machine – until now. Until, that is, the Acrowood Slant Disc Chipper.
Acrowood’s Slant Disc Chippers produce a high-yield, uniform chip quality with low capital investment and low maintenance cost. In fact, it is often cheaper to install a new Acrowood Slant Disc Chipper than to fix an old chipper that needs rebuilding!
A pivoting casing quadrant provides unobstructed access to the chipper disc for knife changes.
The Acrowood 6120 Slant Disc Chippers’ unique “dead” shaft design allows the disc to be easily moved towards or away from the anvil. This provides a very tight set-up clearance between the knife and the anvil for excellent chip production with minimal pins and fines.
Chip quality is enhanced by a very short “C” path – the distance from the anvil to the shaft centerline to the middle of the knife on the disc.
The slanted disc and the full use of the wide, flat anvil and orientation of wastewood in the spout yield high chip quality. With the knives cutting downward with the wood in a stable position on the anvil (called the “least energy position” by Acrowood engineers) chipping occurs without appreciable movement, greatly improving chip quality.
All slant disc chippers include an integral motor base for simplified chipper installation.
The short spout length on Acrowood Slant Disc Chippers allows installation of the infeed conveyor as close to the anvil as possible. This optimizes chip quality by minimizing shingle production caused by “dead space.” The shorter the dead space, the better the chip quality.
Finally, Chips have a free flowing exit path, minimizing chip damage. The optional cyclonic discharge feature further minimizes damage and reduces generation of fines and pins.
The Acrowood Slant Disc Chipper is supplied with facemounted knives and wedges for a damage resistant, simple knife package. All sizes can also be supplied with disposable knives as an OEM option.
Acrowood engineers designed the spout to engage infeed material across the whole width of the anvil rather than the narrow area commonly used in other vertical disc chippers. This distributes wear across the entire anvil and knife length, increasing parts life by three to four times.
At Acrowood we believe the best isn’t necessarily the most costly, and we prove it with the Acrowood Slant Disc Chipper. It has the lowest installed cost of any disc chipper on the market.
The horizontal feed system is installed close to the floor with a discharge behind rather than underneath the chipper, eliminating the need for a pit or raising the machine. Simply run a conveyor in, and run a conveyor out. An integral motor base makes installation inexpensive with minimum foundation requirements. Also, a driven sheave is standard.
Acrowood Slant Disc Chippers can be configured to conform to a mill’s special requirements. Models are available for heavier-duty applications. The chippers can be “untipped” with a different base to become a gravity feed bottom discharge machine, or a different casing and addition of fan blades can convert them into overhead discharge units. Slant Disc Chippers are available in sizes ranging from 42“ to 84“ disc diameter, depending on the application.
Wastewood, rechipping, and small log chipping are accomplished using the 42″, 52″, and 61″ chippers, while large wastewood and whole log chipping are handled by the two 84″ models. Contact Acrowood to see which of these several designs best suits your specific application.

Slant Disc Chippers (or Whole Log Chippers) are the second machine in the pulping process after debarking, the clean logs are rapidly feed into a chipper and cut to specific sizes and length for the pulping application.
The change in knife position did not upset log feeding or chip production. It was possible to show that the chipper was taking the logs in at an 11 percent faster rate, but the actual horse power used was lower than for the 8 knife disc! Somehow the new angles used allowed the knives to slice through the wood more efficiently and effectively, actually lowering the horsepower per ton of chips produced.
